US Uses Tech to Classify Brazil’s PCC, Red Command as Terrorists

by admin477351

The United States has formally recognized Brazil’s two major criminal syndicates, the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command, as foreign terrorist organizations. This decision is based on their extensive involvement in drug trafficking, organized crime, and posing threats to regional security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that these groups are some of the most violent in Brazil and have extended their influence throughout Latin America and into the United States. This designation aligns them with other notorious criminal organizations in the region that have received similar classifications in the past.

Originating from Brazil’s prison system, both the PCC and the Red Command have grown into formidable transnational crime networks. They are heavily involved in the trafficking of cocaine, sourced from neighboring nations, to markets in North America and Europe.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed opposition to the US’s move, citing Brazil’s existing mechanisms for tackling organized crime and raising concerns about potential impacts on national sovereignty. Nonetheless, Brazilian authorities have recently intensified operations against PCC activities, including efforts to counter their alleged infiltration into the financial sector.

As Brazil approaches its presidential elections, the designation is likely to influence the political landscape. Opposition parties have welcomed the measure, viewing it as a robust international stance against organized crime. Meanwhile, analysts are evaluating the practical outcomes of this designation, particularly regarding its effects on financial transactions and regional security cooperation.
