Ellis and Zampa’s Wicketless Spells Contribute to Australia’s T20 World Cup Disaster

Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa, Australia’s match-winners against Ireland, endured forgettable performances as Zimbabwe inflicted a crushing 23-run defeat in the T20 World Cup. The key bowlers’ inability to take wickets allowed Zimbabwe to post a match-winning total and highlighted Australia’s growing problems.
Ellis, who had been instrumental in the previous match, finished with figures of 0 for 34 from his four overs. Zampa, Australia’s premier spin bowler, fared only slightly better with 0 for 31. The pair’s combined figures of 0 for 65 meant Zimbabwe’s batsmen were able to build partnerships without the fear of regular breakthroughs. The lack of wickets allowed Brian Bennett to remain unbeaten on 64 and guide Zimbabwe to a competitive 169-2.
Cameron Green provided Australia’s best bowling performance with figures of 1 for 6, dismissing Ryan Burl for 35 with the first ball after Marcus Stoinis left the field injured. Stoinis had earlier claimed the wicket of Tadiwanashe Marumani, caught behind for 35, but was then struck on the hand by a full toss from Burl. The injury forced Stoinis from the field and disrupted Australia’s bowling plans.
Despite Ellis and Zampa’s efforts to restrict Zimbabwe to just four boundaries in the final four overs, the damage was already done. Bennett’s composed innings, supported by contributions from Marumani and Burl, had given Zimbabwe enough runs to defend. When Australia came to chase, they collapsed spectacularly to 29 for 4 in the powerplay, with Blessing Muzarabani claiming 4 for 17.
Matthew Renshaw’s fighting 65 and Glenn Maxwell’s 31 briefly threatened a recovery, but Australia was eventually bowled out for 146 with three balls remaining. The defeat represents Australia’s first to Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup cricket since 2007 and leaves their tournament progression in serious doubt. Victory against Sri Lanka is now mandatory, though even that may not be sufficient.
