In a significant boost to Central America’s travel industry, tourism between El Salvador and Guatemala is experiencing rapid growth, establishing itself as a formidable regional market. This trend is reshaping how tourism is perceived and practiced across the region, highlighting the appeal of short, cross-border adventures.
El Salvador welcomed 4.1 million international visitors in 2025, marking a continuation of robust growth in its tourism sector. A substantial portion of these visitors hailed from Guatemala, with approximately 1.5 million Guatemalans traveling to El Salvador throughout the year. Simultaneously, more than 1.75 million Salvadorans embarked on trips to Guatemala, underscoring a rising interest in regional travel.
This surge is largely driven by road travel, a departure from traditional tourism markets that rely heavily on international flights. Nearly half of the tourists visiting El Salvador arrived by land, and Guatemala reported even higher numbers of overland arrivals. This shift has fostered what experts term “exploration tourism,” where travelers seek brief getaways to explore beaches, mountain towns, cultural landmarks, and natural attractions.
Guatemalan tourists are particularly drawn to El Salvador’s renowned surf beaches like Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte. Meanwhile, Salvadoran visitors often find themselves captivated by Guatemala’s volcanic regions, hot springs, and mountainous landscapes. Enhanced border infrastructure and streamlined migration procedures have further bolstered this tourism boom by minimizing travel delays between the two nations.
The burgeoning tourism corridor has spurred economic activity, benefiting restaurants, hotels, and local businesses in border areas. Officials anticipate that overland tourism will continue its upward trajectory through 2026. This trend is posing new challenges for Costa Rica, whose tourism industry is more reliant on long-haul visitors from North America and Europe. Analysts suggest that Central America is increasingly being marketed and explored as an interconnected multi-country destination, prompting tourism operators to craft regional travel packages.
