Russia has formally offered India co-production of its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, citing a long history of effective defense collaboration. Ambassador Denis Alipov pointed to “Operation Sindoor” as a “testament to its effectiveness” when highlighting the 70% of India’s military hardware that is of Russian origin.
This new proposal aims to build on the successful joint production of BrahMos missiles, Su-30 MKI jets, and T-90 tanks. Alipov stated this would also support India’s own indigenous AMCA fighter program.
The ambassador emphasized the “unique” nature of this 60-year partnership, which is based on “battlefield experience that Russia willingly shares.” This practical cooperation is further bolstered by joint “Indra” military exercises.
The major defense announcement was made in the shadow of a diplomatic row sparked by Donald Trump. Trump claimed India would stop buying Russian oil, a statement the US has backed with tariffs.
India’s MEA, however, insisted its energy policy is guided by “consumer interests.” Alipov supported this, calling the oil “beneficial” and contrasting Russia’s partnership approach with US penalties.
