Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, in his inaugural address to the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized Mexico’s dedication to national sovereignty, non-intervention, and international cooperation. Representing the country in the absence of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco underscored Mexico’s ability to collaborate globally while preserving its sovereignty, advocating for international cooperation without subordination.
Velasco highlighted Mexico’s social policies, efforts in poverty reduction, and the reported decrease in homicide rates, connecting these initiatives to Mexico’s broader stance that enduring peace is contingent upon social development and respect for territorial integrity and self-determination. On international issues, he reiterated Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, recognizing Palestine’s right to exist within secure and recognized borders. He also expressed Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo on Cuba and affirmed Mexico’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance.
During the assembly, Velasco engaged in discussions with foreign officials from nations such as Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru, strengthening Mexico’s international partnerships. His meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
With Peru, Velasco discussed the reopening of embassies following restored diplomatic ties, with both countries agreeing to pursue dialogue and mutual respect. Other meetings concentrated on economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, trade relations, and efforts to fortify multilateral institutions.
