Mexico Faces Fuel Supply Challenges as U.S. Considers Diesel Export Ban

by admin477351

Mexico is bracing for potential disruptions in its fuel supply following U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for a proposal to restrict diesel exports. This move, intended to tackle soaring fuel prices in the U.S., could significantly impact Mexico, which depends heavily on U.S. diesel imports.

In June 2026, Mexico imported approximately 288,000 barrels of U.S. diesel per day, accounting for over 40% of the country’s diesel demand. The Mexican government has stated that it can rely on its domestic refining network to help maintain fuel supplies. Additionally, it continues to implement fuel subsidies and price-support measures while exploring ways to boost domestic production and storage capacity.

The U.S. administration is currently assessing the feasibility of implementing either a full or partial restriction on diesel exports. However, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has cautioned that a broad export ban could lead to complications for other fuel types and potentially drive up prices.

If U.S. diesel exports are curtailed, Mexico could face increased transportation and logistics costs. To mitigate the risk, the country may need to diversify its import sources and enhance its domestic refining capabilities to reduce its reliance on U.S. fuel supplies.
