Advanced Navigation Reroutes Russian Tanker to Cuba After Atlantic Setback

A Russian tanker, the Universal, carrying approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel, has reportedly altered its course after initially setting sail for Cuba, only to spend weeks adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Originally departing from Russia in April, the tanker was headed for the island nation but was later observed redirecting towards Brazil after drifting in the Sargasso Sea, northeast of the Caribbean.

Maritime tracking data indicated the Universal’s destination was updated to “For order,” a term used in the shipping industry when a vessel is awaiting new directives or a final destination. This tanker is subject to sanctions from several Western nations, including the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada. During its journey, the ship was reportedly escorted by Russian naval vessels before making its way into the Atlantic.

Cuba has been grappling with acute fuel shortages and frequent electricity blackouts, exacerbating the country’s energy crisis under the strain of limited fuel imports. This year, only one Russian tanker is believed to have successfully delivered oil supplies to Cuba, having received the necessary clearance to proceed. However, those supplies have since been depleted, intensifying energy challenges on the island.

The United States has maintained its economic pressure on Cuba, urging political and economic reforms within the country. The tensions between Washington and Havana have further escalated, partly due to US legal actions against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, related to the 1996 aircraft shootdown incident involving the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. In a recent move, the US deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its strike group in the region, heightening the diplomatic strain.
